So You Wanna Be A Medium?
Misconception: ALL psychic mediums saw spirits and ghosts when they were young or had strong psychic experiences, or… knew they were just plain "different" than other kids. Well, the last part, sure, for me anyway, but these things are NOT necessary to qualify as a medium. Many people pulled to study mediumship will read the books some famous mediums have put out, and get all insecure about their own abilities. SURELY they couldn't have any abilities after reading the stories about these mediums. I know I felt insecure. One medium saw spirits constantly and had a relationship with their spirit guide at age 5. Another medium saw their passed ancestors in the room constantly, or knew who it was on the telephone every time it rang. It was like a game to that family. It seems every book I pick up about a medium has these similar experiences. Everyone has a story, but... I know when I read these books, I felt instantly insecure, even AFTER I was connecting with spirit myself and had become a medium. So even after KNOWING I was connecting with spirit through the information I gave and the validations I received back, I still wondered if I was up to par because of my own childhood psychic experiences, or lack thereof. Imagine if you have a strong pull to work with mediumship, but then read these books, and because you don't have these similar experiences, you just let the pull go figuring you just can't do it? These books CAN definitely help us and I recommend reading them, but sometimes they also can make us a bit insecure. We have to know to trust ourselves and guides. Our story is our own.. don't compare yourself to others.
I did NOT see spirits when I was little, as some mediums did - at least not that I remember. I did NOT have too many psychic experiences at all when I was a child except for a heck of a LOT of deja vu which confused me. I don't remember other psychic occurrences, but then again, my childhood was more about "blocking" memories rather than trying to remember things like psychic experiences. So where did the abilities come from? As with many mediums, it was probably from experiencing a traumatic childhood where it can be the actual trauma that triggers it, or you learn to disconnect. When I was little I shifted easily from the physical world to a "fantasy" world to "get away". When things were rough or scary, I went to that world/place VERY quickly and easily. I completely disconnected and put myself somewhere where I was happy and safe. In mediumship, you send your mind away (disconnect) and become a "channel" for spirit to work through. If you let your brain stay rather than send it out, it tends to get in the way attacking you in this way or that, or trying to analyze this thought or symbol which will come in during a reading. "What if it's a cat and not a dog... what if it's Bertha and not Betty… am I REALLY thinking I can do this? How do I know??? " Mind sabotage. It's NORMAL to get attacked by your brain... the trick is to be in control and tell your mind to just "go out somewhere else" for an hour. You can ask your Divine energy to help too, as prayer works very, very well to keep your controlling and ego mind at bay.
Skip ahead to my late 20's/early 30's, the pull that I had in my teens came back and stronger than ever. I studied the Tarot and learned that the Tarot books were good for learning the "basic" meaning of the cards; however, it was what how I intuited the cards that was really so important, not so much what the books interpreted the cards as. The Tarot was a springboard and helped my intuition flourish immensely. Soon, I started getting totally different messages clairvoyantly and clairscentiently (seeing and feeling respectively) for clients, rather than what I had "labeled" the cards to mean. I didn't quite get it, but was told by my Tarot instructors and mentors to "go with it", so I did (a wonderful course is given by www.ata-tarot.com - check it out if the Tarot pulls you).
Then, one day, I saw a medium work and was blown away - it hit me right in the solar plexus. I just KNEW that THIS was the pull I had been feeling for quite a while. It threw me for a loop and it was a huge awakening for me. I'd been wondering if the Tarot was right for me - and it had been at the time, but not anymore. Keep in mind, the spirit realm spooked the you-know-what out of me, so I wasn't sure WHY I was so sure (!) that I was supposed to do this work, but again, I went with it. I read every book I could find on mediumship, learned about protection and the Law of Vibration, etc. Many books said that psychometry was important to learn. So, I worked with it, and soon I found that I was seeing spirit people while doing psychometry readings AND having the info validated by my sitter. WOW… and what an amazing thing to see and get information from someone who had passed over, to help the person HERE understand a little more about the afterlife, and that their loved one was OK and around them. It filled my soul with joy and still does with every reading.
For some, it can be a major trauma which occurs in ones life, bringing these repressed abilities to the surface. For others, there may have been many childhood experiences (psychically, mediumistically, etc.). Some may have had difficult childhood, while others maybe just had a pull and a feeling to learn more about mediumship. EVERY ONE of us is unique, so don't let the books you read intimidate you if you have such a pull towards mediumship. It takes learning, practice and reading, and still more learning, practice and reading and then even more learning, practice and reading. It is NOT something that happens overnight. It's learning about your five psychic senses and how you obtain information from the spirit realm. It's TRUSTING yourself and your guides. It's being prayerful and connecting to your Divine energy first before readings. It's meditating. It's working with your spirit guides. It's keeping healthy and balancing your regular life with this work. It's keeping your ego (little and big) out of the picture. It's so many, many, many things, but it's also… REWARDING. I LOVE my work and wouldn't, and couldn't go back to anything else.
If you have the pull, that curiosity, the wonder, take the time to learn about it. Read about it, practice it and work with it. You ALREADY have the ability to some extent - everyone does - yes, YOU too! Being psychic is a God-given ABILITY not a power. Psychic is only the Greek word for "of the soul." We all have at least ONE psychic ability if not more. And when we develop one, others follow in time, but you have to take the time to develop. Your guides also know you are learning and have a team to help you. Just TRUST in them and in yourself. You'll see results soon enough!
